GPC (Global Privacy Control)

What is GPC (Global Privacy Control)?

Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a technique that helps end users control their privacy on the browser level. GPC is a global opt-out system enacted in California for CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) currently. This feature allows end users to opt out of the sale of their personal information without choosing the Do not sell my data option manually.

Why is GPC (Global Privacy Control) necessary?

Nowadays, everything is digitalized. We rely on the digital world for all tasks, big or small. We constantly browse, search, purchase, and access numerous websites and applications. We enter our personal information, including name, address, credit card number, bank account number, etc. for these online transactions. Some fraudulent sites use, store, and sell this information for their benefit without the knowledge of the user.

To restrict this and to respect user privacy GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), and Generic regulations are comes into the picture.

To increase user privacy to one more level California introduced GPC (Global Privacy Control) for CCPA in October 2020. In July 2021 Rob Bonta, the attorney general of California sent a letter to many businesses requiring that they should honor the GPC signal under CCPA. Soon GPC will be adopted by other states also for GDPR or other regulations.

How GPC (Global Privacy Control) works and how Privacy Pillar helps you with this?

Privacy Pillar is GPC- compatible. The user must download the GPC extension to ensure his privacy with GPC. For each website the user visits, he/she must enable the GPC signal. If you choose CCPA regulation, Privacy Pillar provides you the choice to enable or disable GPC.

When a user visits your website, It will capture the GPC signal sent by the user's browser. The user can view the Gpc banner and click on Continue then it automatically registers do not sell personal info for the user.

The user doesn't need to actively select the option to not sell their data. Consequently, GPC made the user's life easier. Therefore a user can enjoy browsing several websites without worrying about a data breach.
